I am uniq 10 Oct 2005
Thispagehasmoved, please update any bookmarks or links to refer to the new location.
Two of the things I love most about unix are learning new tools and tricks and teaching tools and tricks to others. One of unix's real gems is uniq(1): "report or filter out repeated lines in a file". Extremely simple and powerful, probably a page or two of easy code, but completely indispensible. I usually use it to get the intersections or differences of lists using the -d and -u options. Intersection is pretty straightforward:
cat list_one.txt list_two.txt | sort | uniq -d

Been getting the itch to blog again, and it looks like pbwiki has added some features that might make this work better; if nothing else it might be a neat experiment until I get a \"real\" blog somewhere...
I build this in a weekend, one day to gather the parts and run other errands and one day to build it and start cooking!
So far, I think the best thing I've made is an 11-hour boston butt (pork shoulder) using only the smokey flavor of the natural hardwood charcoal, though I'll definitely brine it first next time and maybe smoke it over corn cobs. Rosemary sprigs make a really nice smoke for chicken or lamb.

Some of my favorite smokes include rosemary sprigs (especially for chicken or lamb) or corncobs (very sweet smoke) but just plain chunk charcoal produces a wonderful smokey character all by itself.
